How Low Can Katie Go? Pretty Low

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

The Huffington Post reports that CBS news personality Katie Couric’s CBS Evening News ratings have hit a historic low:

Last week, the CBS Evening News marked a new low in the ratings, recording just 5.39 million total viewers for the previous week.

This week, the Katie Couric-led broadcast sunk even lower than that, reaching a new new low of 5.34 million total viewers for last week…

Ouch, Katie, ouch!

Ah, the excitement of reality shows.

The exotic locations.

The interesting people.

The fun of working in “The Business.”

Oh, an being treated like a sweatshop worker.

Reuters has more via Truthout:

Couric, CBS Not Seeing “Eye” to Eye

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

The Wall Street Journal reports that CBS news “anchor” Katie Couric could be bye-bye from the Eye as early as President Barack Obama’s inauguration in January 2009.

CBS News executives and people close to Katie Couric say that the “CBS Evening News” anchor is likely to leave the network well before her contract expires in 2011 — possibly soon after the presidential inauguration early next year. Ms. Couric isn’t even halfway through her five-year contract with CBS, which began in June 2006 and pays an annual salary of around $15 million.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120778369100203247.html?mod=djemalertNEWS

I knew this would happen the day they hired her. She lacked and lacks the skills and abilities to be a convincing journalist, let alone what once was the nightly TV news program of record.

Her fluffy approach on the Today show and cutesy-pie perkiness worked at 7 a.m. but not at 6 p.m. on an actual news program.

God only know what her next gig might be. Perhaps she can host a kids show or be a host selling cosmetics on the Home Shopping Network. You know, something more to her ability level.

If I were a CBS suit, I’d pull the plug on her now, bring back Bob Schieffer, and start looking to poach someone decent from MSNBC or CNN who has actually reported on real news prior to being plunked down as a news reader in Uncle Walter’s hallowed seat.

Katie Couric Trying to Control Hillary Clinton? Not a Chance

Friday, April 4th, 2008

This has unmitigated disaster written all over it.

CBS’s untalented and ill-prepared main “anchor,” Katie Couric, is scheduled to moderate a debate between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hillary Clinton agrees to April 27 debate
Hillary Clinton has agreed to a Sunday, April 27, primetime debate in North Carolina, which would be “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric’s first turn to moderate a presidential debate.

Couric struggles to report and read the news when it is plopped in front of her on a teleprompter. Then you ask her to control Hillary the Harridan in a debate?

This has freakin’ train wreck written all over it.

I’ll watch just because I won’t be able to avert my eyes from the disaster.

CBS, please bring back Bob Schieffer!

Jericho: Up in a Mushroom Cloud

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Bad news for virtual post-Armageddon Kansans: CBS’s Jericho is dead.

A blurb from The Hollywood Reporter:

CBS cancels ‘Jericho’
CBS has nuked “Jericho.” Producers have been told the show is ending its run on the broadcast network, sources said. CBS will air the season finale on Tuesday with an ending that helps give closure to fans.

No more faux irradiated Kansas to kick around anymore on the TV schedule.

CSI: NY–Growling Gary Sinise

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I’m laying in bed listening to CBS’s CSI: NY tonight.

Then it strikes me.

Gary Sinise doesn’t so much act as growl.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Or maybe mumble while lowly growling.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

All his lines come out the same way: kind of a low monotonish grumble.

At least he’s not constantly taking his sunglasses on and off like his colleague David Caruso on CSI: Miami.

The Guiding Light Changes How Soaps Are Produced

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Soap operas have been produced pretty much the same way since the early days of TV in the 1950s.

Once in a while, a technology comes along that might change them–a bit.  Things like videotape come to mind.

But according to My Gal Chrissy at CBS, the Eye Network has embarked on bringing the soap opera–and Guiding Light–into the 21st Century in more ways than one.

Here’s the CBS release:

Daytime Drama Takes On New Contemporary Format To Give Viewers A Realistic View Of Life In Springfield

GUIDING LIGHT will premiere the first episode, which was produced as a result of a new production model that will revolutionize the way daytime dramas are created, on Friday, Feb. 29 on the CBS Television Network. With transformations throughout the entire show, these changes will bring a more current and realistic look to the series.

In the episode, viewers will see “Jonathan Randall (Tom Pelphrey) hit yet another rocky point in his tormented life. A troubled young man, out seeking revenge for his unhappy childhood, he got involved with spoiled, rich “Lizzie Spaulding (Marcy Rylan), with whom he had a baby girl, though he eventually married his true love, Tammy. A series of dangerous circumstances culminating in Tammy’s death forced this now upstanding father to fake his and his daughter’s deaths, but Jonathan has returned to Springfield to finish up where he had left off and marry Lizzie.

“Guiding Light made the leap from radio to television in 1952 and now it makes another leap,” says Barbara Bloom, Senior Vice President of Daytime Programming, CBS. “By making the show’s production more relevant, and yet continuing the phenomenal storytelling that has kept it the longest-running drama in broadcast history, Guiding Light is taking down the barriers and pushing the show ahead.   Executive Producer Ellen Wheeler along with GL’s cast and crew, have been fearless, and our fans are going to be able to experience their favorite characters like never before.”

GUIDING LIGHT’S new production model includes permanent sets inside its New York City studio. Once having only eight sets to work with, the show now has forty, which also have four walls and a ceiling, where previously each set had two or three walls and the tops remained open exposing hundreds of lights and wires.

Direction has also been changed. Hand held cameras move around with the actors, shooting them from all angles, bringing the audience closer to each character. These changes give the sets a more realistic feeling, as well as changing the way the actors react in a situation. Editing has changed as well. It now takes place almost simultaneously as filming – all done within the confines of a small digital booth.

A production suite with monitors, directors and producers is a thing of the past. GUIDING LIGHT has also decided to break out of the current mold of filming location shoots only once or twice a year. The show has adopted the town of Peapack, New Jersey to shoot all of its exterior scenes, some of which have already aired, thus adding to the realistic look of the show. These scenes will total approximately 20% off the production.

“These changes will allow us to tell our stories in a more intimate way, while giving our characters’ struggles, relationships and issues more of a real-life feel,â€? said Ellen Wheeler, executive producer of GUIDING LIGHT.  “The show will have a more organic feel, along with more authenticity, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring this to our fans.”

Peopleschoicemidnightstar Awards Show Calls an Audible

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

The Peopleschoicemidnightstar Awards has had to call an audible.

It appears because of the WGA strike, the show had to change its format. So, schlocky awards will be given out, I’m betting, with even great schlock than usual.

My Gal Phoebe at CBS has the lastest on tonight’s big show:
