Matt Smith is Eleventh Doctor

The BBC made their big announcement yesterday and the eleventh Doctor will be…Matt Smith.

“Who?” you say.

Smith, a relative unknown, has been seen on stage in That Face, and on television in the BBC series’ Party Animals and Moses Jones, and in an episode of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, starring Who alum Billie Piper. 

Executive producer/writer Steven Moffat said they were blown away by Smith’s audition and they knew right away he was the right choice for the eleventh Doctor. 

At 26, Smith will be the youngest actor ever to play the centuries old time lord.  He takes over for David Tennant who is set to begin filming his final 4 specials this month.  Smith will take over the role for the 2010 series.

New Doctor Who to be Announced on Saturday

doctor_who_logo When David Tennant announced he was stepping down as The Doctor back in October, everyone wondered who would be chosen to fill his shoes.

Well, the wait is almost over.  The eleventh Doctor will be announced during a Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One tomorrow, January 3.

Some of the favorites for the new Doctor include Murphy’s Law and Cold Feet star James Nesbitt as well as Paterson Joseph, John Simm and David Morrissey - who appeared in the 2008 Christmas special. Other names that have been mentioned include comedienne Jennifer Saunders, former Doctor Who assistant Billie Piper and actress Catherine Zeta Jones. Could we see the first female Doctor?

The new Doctor will begin filming for the 2010 series this summer.  Tennant still has four specials to film before he leaves the role, which he will begin work on sometime this month.
