Iron Chef is Back!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

7990142451press56200835657PM.jpgWhat is:

  • A Japanese TV program with goofy English voiceovers?
  • Is a game show of sorts?
  • Makes contestants do odd things with odd things?

It’s MXC: Most Extreme Competition!

No!

It’s Iron Chef and it’s back.

My Gal Margot has more on the cult and culinary favorite on the Fine Living Network:

Iron Chef Japan is back on the air after a very long hiatus. Starting May 5th, every night of the week at 11pm you can catch classic episodes of Iron Chef Japan on Fine Living Network. For some classic Chairman Kaga lovin’ and voice over madness, plus some badass kitchen skills, nasty secret ingredients, and ridiculous techniques (check out the guy making pasta), there are some video mash-ups and preview clips of the show up on YouTube. Check them all out here: http://youtube.com/user/FineLivingVideos

For more info - and to take a poll about who your favorite Iron Chef is- check out the official website: http://www.fineliving.com/ironchefjapan.

The Price (and the Host) Is Right but the Show Is Boring Beyond All Human Tolerance

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Home on vacation, I watched about all I could stand of CBS’s The Price Is Right the day after Christmas.

I’m still trying to recover from that experience.

I think Drew Carey as the new host is great. In fact, he is the only good thing about the show. He is still so enthusiastic about the gig and actually seems to care about the contestants. Bob Barker never seemed like he was too awfully engaged in the show and particularly with the contestants, like he was above all that.

Carey is The People’s Host; Barker was Barker’s Host.

So the change in hosts is a good thing. How long Carey or any semi-normal person can remain that enthusiastic about winning toaster ovens on a set that looks like it’s a runaway from a bad 1970s disco is anybody’s guess.

The biggest problem with the show–besides the cheap ass prizes in many instances–is the games. While I understand that one person’s “tradition” is another person’s “boring,” these games are now so old you can blow an inch of dust off of them. I mean, really, Plinko? The spinning thing where you try to hit one dollar?

Please.

The geniuses who produce this show have been calling it in for 25 years or so. Technology has marched past and over them. We live in a visual, electronic age. The Price Is Right is basically a televised church bingo game.

I wish Drew Carey luck. My guess is that he’ll last five years tops–either that, or he’ll need some heavy doses of drugs to get him through the sheer boredom that is The Price Is Right.

Bob is gone and Drew Carey is a more congenial and enthusiastic host, but the show is boringness squared.

Come On Down! Get a Piece of The Price Is Right!

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Come on down! You’re the next contestant to purchase part of the set to the Price Is Right!

Could you imagine owning part of the set of The Price Is Right. I would imagine you would need a living room the size of a warehouse, but hey, why not? Send your wife through the doors and caller her a “Barker Beauty.”

My main hope is that they get rid of all of the set in the name of charity and put up a new one that brings the show from the
60s and 70s into at least the late 80s.

My New Gal Cindy from CBS has more.
