Moonlight Vampire Gets New Life at CBS
Friday, August 15th, 2008
No, I’m sorry to report that Moonlight is not coming back to CBS, but one of its stars, Alex O’Loughlin, will be.
O’Loughlin, who played sexy vampire Mick St. John in the recently canceled series, has signed a one year talent holding deal with CBS. Producer Mark Gordon, of Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds fame, will be developing a new series with O’Loughlin in mind. The deal also allows O’Loughlin to pitch movie ideas to CBS Films.
Moonlight revolved around O’Loughlin’s vampire character and his relationship with a mortal woman, Beth, played by Sophia Myles. It developed a loyal fan base, some of whom organized a blood drive with the American Red Cross in an effort to bring attention to the show and help save it from cancellation. The ratings weren’t big though, averaging only about 7.5 million viewers per week, and CBS announced in May that the show wouldn’t be picked up for a second season.
Fans continued to hold out hope, and there were rumors that DirecTV might get involved, but the show received the final "nail in the coffin" when producer Joel Silver told the Comic-Con audience last month that the show was officially dead.
