Lost’s Baby Bait and Switch
I am a big fan of ABC’s Lost.
I like the twists and turns. I like the characters. I even like the skiping forward and back in time.
But what I don’t like is being played.
And that’s exactly how I feel about Thursday’s episode, “Ji Yeon.”*
Lostie Sun is pregant. And women who become pregnant on The Island don’t live very long.
As we find out, Sun apparently makes it off as one of the Oceanic 6. So does her husband Jin. Or at least one would reasonably things, given how the flashbacks were edited.
Jin is feverishly trying to buy a panda at a toy store for a newborn. He takes a panicked phone call. He tries to hail a taxi. Sun is about to deliver her baby. Sun calls out for Jin.
Unfortunately, the two events are not happening in the same time. Jin is looking for a toy panda for the daughter of the CEO of China’s largest auto manufacturer who’s just given birth–two months after Jin and Sun were married, before Oceanic 815.
Sun is giving birth post-Oceanic 815. And Jin is literally dead and buried.**
We were played with too cute editing. It was dishonest.
It’s one thing to be surprised; it’s another to be misled.
To the producers of Lost, please don’t treat me like an idiot. We, your loyal fans deserve better.
*Sun’s baby’s name.
**It’s not clear if Jin made if off The Island alive or not.
