Marshall Matt Dillon: TV’s Most Boring Boyfriend

For some reason this week, my colleagues and I started talking about the old TV western, Gunsmoke, at lunch.

I made the observation that Marshall Matt Dillon had to be the most boring boyfriend in TV history.

Imagine the following conversation with this girlfriend/madam/saloon owner, Miss Kitty.

Miss Kitty: “Matt, honey, let’s get the hell out of Dodge and take a long weekend trip to someplace exotic like Garden City or Wichita?”

Marshall Dillon: “Sorry Miss Kitty. Let’s just do what we usually do and sit down here at the saloon and talk to Doc and Festus.”

Miss Kitty: “Matt, if it weren’t for your little six-shooter, I’d be outta here, understand?”

I also observed that we never got to see what was going on upstairs at Miss Kitty’s Longbranch. If the HBO series Deadwood is any indication, that was where the “girls” were “working.”
